2001: A Space Odyssey - 12/7/2018
This evening Sarah and I attended a very special presentation of Stanley Kubrick’s 2001: A Space Odyssey at the
Athena Cinema in uptown Athens. The film was shown with all of the dialog and sounds effects, but no musical
soundtrack. Instead the music was provided live by Duo Unprepared. The duo was comprised of Roger
Braun, percussion and Andre Gribou, pianos. The live score was not intended to be a recreation of the original,
but rather a re-imagined score.
The film was presented in its full theatrical release complete with overture and intermission. I was very
impressed with the live music. It complimented the drama perfectly by following the highs and low of the story
precisely. The new music seemed to move the flow of the film along at a better pace. I found the choice of
Space Oddity to be an exceptional decision. And the musical cues matched the scene edits perfectly. I
can’t say enough good things about this presentation. I dare to say that this has been a more enjoyable soundtrack
then the original.
