First Man IMAX - 10/28/2018
This evening Sarah and I drove to Columbus and to AMC Easton Town Center 30 to see First Man IMAX. This biopic
starred Ryan Gosling and Claire Foy and was directed by Damien Chazelle, who also directed Whiplash and La La Land.
The movie is the life of astronaut Neil Armstrong from the time he was a X-15 test pilot to being the first man to walk on the
moon. It is the story of the his life and family and not the story of the Apollo program.
Gosling does a good job of portraying the quiet and reserved pilot and engineer. And Foy does a great job of playing his
wife and caretaker of the household.
There are not as many visual effect shots in the film as you might expect from a film about going to the moon, rather the camera
tends to stay inside the spacecraft. In fact there are a lot of closeups on the actors faces. One criticism might be
that there is too much camera shaking during the scenes inside the cockpit and capsules.
This film is not in the same vein as Apollo 13 or From the Earth to the Moon, but it is a film that is very worthwhile
seeing. The IMAX format didn’t seem to add anything to the experience. Seeing it on a regular screen should be just
as enjoyable. Go check it out.
