Artemis II - 4/1/2026

Today from my desk at work I watched the Artemis II liftoff at 6:35pm.  It was quite a sight to see such a beautiful and flawless climb to orbit.

I'm very excited about America's return to the moon after more than 50 years.

Artemis II

Seeing this lift off brings back what I believed to be my very earliest memory.  And that is staying up late one night when we used to live with Grandpa Hiram and Grandma Dawn on Blue Jay Road in Newark.  I seem to remember being very tired and seeing a fuzzy black-and-white television picture.

Apollo 17

This would have been the launch of Apollo 17, as it was the only Apollo flight that lifted off during the night.  That final Apollo mission left the launch pad on December 7, 1972 at 12:33am.

I also remember over the next few days as the mission progressed, riding in the backseat of a car while mom drove.  I had my head against the window, looking up at the night sky, looking at the moon and trying to see the astronauts walking around up there.  I think this was also the first time I realized that the moon isn't just white, but there are shades of gray and variations in the surface of the moon.  My young mind tried to figure out if these gray areas were in fact, the NASA astronauts walking on the surface.
