Lantern Festival at the Columbus Zoo - 8/29/2026
This evening, as part of my birthday gift from Sarah, she took me to the Lantern Festival at the Columbus Zoo. We arrived just
before the gates opened at 7:30.
Lantern Festival was a family-friendly event held after regular zoo hours. This was a spectacle featuring over 70 sets of Asian
lanterns highlighting beautiful wildlife scenes from around the world. With multicolored LED animal lanterns illuminated paths
throughout various areas of the zoo.
We learned that the beautiful lanterns are hand-painted by artisans in China and shipped to the zoo and reassembled for display.
Sarah and I both took the opportunity to pet stingrays. And the final activity of the evening we rode Tidal Twist, the zoo's
spinning wild mouse roller coaster. While we waited in line I noticed that all the groups of two riders always sat in the middle
two seats of the four passenger cars. I suggested to Sarah that we both sit all the way to one side to see how that would affect
the spinning. OH MY! What a difference it made. It was the widest, most out of control spinning I've ever
experienced. It was almost too much to handle. But wow, what a way to wrap up our evening at the zoo.
During the festival, most of the animals were resting for the evening and were not viewable. After about two and a half hours,
we left the zoo at 10:00. This was a great evening spent together and the weather was perfect too.
