 The Odyssey 70mm - 7/23/2026
This evening Sarah and I went to the Gateway Film Center in Columbus to see The Odyssey 70mm. This action fantasy film
written and directed by Christopher Nolan starred Matt Damon, Tom Holland, Anne Hathaway, Robert Pattinson, Lupita Nyong'o, Samantha
Morton, Zendaya, Charlize Theron, Elliot Page and John Leguizamo.
This epic film is an adaptation of Homer's ancient Greek poem. After the Trojan War, Odysseus faces a dangerous voyage back to
Ithaca, his home. With his fellow soldiers, they find themselves battling not only the elements, but an array of deadly obstacles
and mythical creatures. His wife Penelope has to deal with the politics at home in Odysseus' absence. And his son,
Telemachus, goes on his own journey to find the truth about his father.
I appreciate that the dialogue is spoken in a natural American accent rather than a stiff British accent that has been stereotypical
in most previous ancient Hollywood productions. The film's running time is nearly three hours. There is a lot of story to
cover and the film moves along at a good pace. Of course there's a lot happening, it's right there in the title.
The cast is stacked. It's so delightful to see such a mass of talent and big name movie stars.
It is visually stunning, but I don't think it's necessary that you see it in 70mm or IMAX to appreciate its beauty. But at
least see it on a theater scene while you can.
This is one of the best movies of the year. Go see it in the theater.
