Meigs Coal Mine 31 - 3/1/2026
Today for our road trip and lunch, I took Sarah and Mom for a drive, first to the site of Meigs Coal Mine 31. This is the underground
mine that Jeff worked at for many years when I was a child.
It is located on St. Rt. 124 about midway between Wilkesville and Langsville in Meigs County. I find it hard to imagine driving
back-and-forth between Murray City and here to work every day.
Our next stop was along St. Rt. 554 west of Kyger, where we saw the last remnants of the conveyor system. The conveyor belt was used
to transport coal from the Meigs mine over the hills and valleys to the Gavin Power Plant in Cheshire on the Ohio River.
Our final stop was for lunch at Millie's Restaurant & Bakery near Middleport. The highlight of the meal was the delightfully unique
Hummingbird Cake.
Today was a very nice afternoon out with my family. And I was happy to show Sarah a little piece of our family history, letting her
see Jeff's old workplace.
