American Sign Museum - 7/5/2025

Today Sarah and I took a road trip across southwestern Ohio.  We met at Sarah's apartment in Blacklick and headed to our first stop.  Just off of Interstate 70 near Dayton we ate lunch at Rax Restaurant in New Carlisle around 11:00.

This is one of the six remaining Rax's and the same location that John and Hank Green visited in April 2024.  The lobby was closed so we had to eat in the car.  While we ate, we watched John and Hank's YouTube video documenting their visit.  I ordered the BBC (Beef, Bacon, and Cheddar), curly fries and a Coke.  The BBC was exactly as I remember it.  Good times.

Our next stop and highlight of the day was in Cincinnati at the American Sign Museum.

The museum shows the evolution of sign-making and the role that signs have played, as far back as 1870.  The collection includes hand painted and gold leafed designs that explores both the innovation and ingenuity of signs.  The vast majority of the signs and the main attraction to the museum are the neon signs.  We joined a guided tour through the museum and then watched a demonstration of the making of neon signs, including bending glass tubes, attaching the electrodes and filling the tubes with gas.  I was impressed how many signs were on display in such a walkable space.  We spent about an hour and a half exploring the colorful sights of the museum.  I highly recommend this experience.

Next, we went shopping at Jungle Jim's International Market in Fairfield.

We explored the multiple aisles of food and beverages from around the world and took home a diverse selection of items.

Our final stop of the day was Spaghetti Warehouse in Dayton for dinner.

We both had an excellent dinner.  This Dayton location reminds me very much of the old Broad St., Columbus (Frankinton neighborhood) location which closed in 2022, when it was forced to close permanently after the roof collapsed.  And like the old Columbus location Dayton has a trolley car inside the dining area where guests can sit and enjoy their meals.

We then made our way back to Sarah's place to conclude our road trip together.  I enjoyed my day with Sarah traveling, talking, sightseeing, dining and shopping.
