Dawes Arboretum - 6/13/2025
Today I drove to Dawes Arboretum south of Newark for a day out with nature, taking photographs and walking. I've traveled
past the arboretum countless times, even in my childhood I would see the signs along the road while we drove back and forth to
Grandma and Grandpa Lanning's house. I've seen the photographs and website for years and now I'm finally making my first
visit.
I arrived at the main gatehouse just after 1:00pm where I showed my ticket and received the map and brochure. Based on
the website I had already chosen my must see sights and double checked my planned route on the map.

So I was off on my long walk in the afternoon heat. I made my way along the Parkswood Trail, Japanese Garden Trail, Holly
Hill Trail and Deepwoods Trail along with portions of the Appalachian Trail, Dogwood Trail, and Lake Trail.

Along the way I visited the Sunken Garden, Sundial, Natural Play Area, Japanese Garden, Holly Hill, Magnolia Collection, Conifer
Glen, Lake Dawes, Hedge Letters, Observation Tower and Woodland Garden.

Sunken Garden.

Japanese Garden.

Hedge Letters.
The weather was hot with a temperature of 82 degrees, bright overcast skies and almost no breeze at all. I estimate that
I walked about three and a half miles. The final mile back to the car was quite a slog and it got the best of me. It
was still an enjoyable day out among the trees, hills and flowers. I finished my visit at the arboretum just past 3:30pm
and made the drive back home.
