Woodies at Kings Island - 9/1/2024

Yesterday I was bored and looking for something to do.  So, I hopped on the Internet and took a look at Kings Island's webcams.  I could see that the park wasn't very crowded, so I decided that I would go to the park today.  The park was open today from 10 to 10 and I arrived at about 11.  There was quite a bit of traffic as I approached the park.  But since it was 11 o'clock on Sunday, I thought maybe the traffic was due to that mega-church across the street from the park entrance.  As it turned out, it wasn't.  The Kings Island parking lot was reasonably full by the time I parked.  In spite of all the cars, traffic flow was very good as the park's new toll plaza from a few years ago works out beautifully.

The lines of the front gate work longer than I'm used to, but I was able to find a short line and made my way into the park relatively quickly.

I made my way directly to the back of the park so that I could get a ride on The Beast.  The line was longer than what I'm accustomed to and it was at that point I decided that instead of trying to get on every coaster possible, I would instead spend today focusing only on the wooden coasters.

My first lap on The Beast was great.  And as I exited the ride, I could see that the line was a bit shorter than before.  So I jumped right back in line for a second lap.

Next, I made my way to Mystic Timbers, and then to the other side of the park for two consecutive laps on Racer and a solo lap on Adventure Express.

I checked out a couple of the restaurants for lunch, but ended up back at my usual, Coney BBQ.  I got the rotisserie chicken and macaroni and cheese.

For the rest of the afternoon, I casually made my way between Racer, Mystic Timbers, and I checked out the views from the top of the Eiffel Tower.

Around dusk, I got another ride on The Beast.  And it was at this point I was planning my evening to conclude with a final night ride on The Beast.  There was still a good bit of time before the park closed so I made my way towards WindSeeker, but as I approached, I could see that it was down for the evening.  For a moment, I considered another ride on Mystic Timbers, but I was afraid that by the time I got off the ride, it would be too late for me to get my night ride on The Beast.

At about 9:15 I got in line for my night ride on The Beast.  At about 9:40 the last train with riders left the station and by 9:45 operations stopped in preparation for the nightly fireworks display.  During the fireworks, the drones were above the former Vortex site and The Beast loading station.  As close as I was to the drones, I was surprised that I was not able to hear any sound from them.  After the fireworks were concluded there was an additional 15 minute delay for the fireworks and drone crews to give the all clear before The Beast opened operations again.

Finally, at about 11:00 I got my long awaited night ride.  It was out of control.  There was no moon out.  Complete darkness.  A wild ride.  It was 11:09 when I exited the ride into the nearly empty park.  It was very quiet as I walked past just a few people in the park to return to the main gate and out to my car.

I got a total of two rides on Mystic Timbers, about six on Racer, one lap on Adventure Express, and a total of four rides on The Beast.  And as for an explanation of why there were so many more people in the park today than yesterday, I overheard a conversation between two other riders while in one of the queues.  He explained that because there were no high school, college or NFL football games today everyone came to the park instead.

It was a beautiful day at Kings Island and the weather was perfect.  Deciding to simply focus on the wooden coasters exclusively was really a good decision.  I didn't feel any pressure to get on a ton of other rides.  It was a good relaxing fun filled day at the park.
