Moulin Rouge and Hyprov - 9/10/2022
Sarah and I began our second day in New York City with lunch at DK PubLIC Restaurant just across the street corner from our
hotel. This neighborhood restaurant and bar had a great atmosphere, service and food. The restaurant gets its name
from the communities it is located in; DK PubLIC is Dutch Kills Pub Long Island City. I chose the breakfast burger.
We then took the subway to Manhattan and Times Square. We got in line at the TKTS booth for discount show
tickets. Weeks ago we had already purchased our tickets for a matinee this afternoon, but now we wanted an evening show
to round out our day. We looked over the choices and prices and decided on getting tickets to Hyprov.
Just a couple blocks away and less than a 10 minute walk was Moulin Rouge. The show was at the Al Hirschfeld
Theatre at West 45th Street between 8th and 9th Avenues.
Baz Luhrmann's revolutionary film comes to life onstage, remixed in a new musical mash-up extravaganza and some updates to
the story. A theatrical celebration of truth, beauty, freedom and above all, LOVE. Splendor and romance, in a show
full of eye-popping excess, glitz, grandeur and glory. Prepare yourself for the spectacular spectacular. This is the
most entertaining musical I've ever experienced.
Athe the show, we caught our breath and rode the subway from midtown to the Union Square neighborhood. Dinner time was
approaching and Sarah selected a diner a few blocks away in Gramercy Park. We ate at Gramercy Kitchen at East 17th Street
and 3rd Avenue. This modern diner was casual and cozy serving a full menu of breakfast, lunch and dinner classics like
omelets & burgers. I had the Chicken Ceasar Wrap and Fries.
Next Sarah wanted to check out the notable bookstore, Strand Book Store at Broadway and East 12 Street. I was intrigued
with their table of banned books, many of which had attached notes explaining when, where and why each book was banned.
And then it was time for our final event of the day, Hyprov at the Daryl Roth Theatre located at the corner of Union
Square and East 15th Street. The unscripted show is hosted by hypnotist Asad Mecci and improvisation legend Colin
Mochrie. So how does this work... 20 random volunteers from the audience are put under hypnosis by Mecci. With their
inhibitions evaporated and their minds no longer their own, the contestants are whittled down until the five best are left on
stage. Mochrie then takes the stage to improvise with the top five while they are still under hypnosis, turning the show
into an improv extravaganza. What a great show and an unexpected addition to our trip.

Tomorrow we'll have one more day of entertainment in The Big Apple.
