Star Wars: The Force Awakens - 12/17/2015
Today was the opening of the latest movie in the Star Wars franchise, Star Wars: The Force Awakens. The first showing
of the film at Movies 10 in Nelsonville was at 7:00 and was shown on several screens. I knew this would be a mad house. To
avoid the mass of avid fans, I decided to get my tickets a week ago and attend the showing at 8:00. As it turned out, there were
only about twenty people in the theater, so we were all able to completely experience the movie to its fullest.
The movie starred Daisy Ridley, John Boyega, Oscar Isaac, Harrison Ford, Carrie Fisher and Mark Hamill and was directed by J.J. Abrams.
The story takes place decades after the events of Return of the Jedi. The First order has risen from the ashes of the empire and
is embattled with the Resistance which is a descendant of the Rebel Alliance. Leia leads the resistance and is searching for her
brother, Luke, who has gone into hiding.
Several new characters are introduced and work well with the returning cast. There are many things in the movie that are very
reminiscent of the original trilogy. Such as a young scavenger living on a desert planet, a cantina filled with dozens of aliens,
a planet-killing ultimate weapon and a bad guy in a black helmet and cape. In hindsight, this may be too much fan service.
This is definitely a Han Solo film. Two-thirds of the way though the movie I thought to myself, “Man, Harrison Ford is in this
movie a lot”.
The action, effects, music and acting are great. The story is unimaginative but has a few good moments.
It’s a great movie. Go check it out.
