3.0 starsThe Girl with the Dragon Tattoo - 12/23/2011

Tonight my friend Matt and I went to see The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo at Movies 10 in Nelsonville.  This thrilling mystery starred Daniel Craig, Rooney Mara, Christopher Plummer and Stellan Skarsgard and was directed by David Fincher.

Daniel Craig plays a journalist who is hired to investigate a murder forty years ago.  While Rooney Mara plays a younger computer hacker with lacking social skills.  Their two story lines seem unrelated but intersect and midway through the film work together to solve the mystery.  The film is cold and slow at times, punctuated by graphic and even brutal scenes of sex, violence and death.

Trent Reznor of Nine Inch Nails composed the music for this movie.  His work on this film had already received high praise in the media and has also received a Golden Globe nomination.  And this after his Oscar win for his music from 2010 film The Social Network.  But as I was watching the movie I noticed that there was very little music at all.  Even is the climactic buildup towards the finale there was mo music.  It was dramatic without the music.  Maybe even more so.  A great choice by David Fincher I must say.  I just don't see why the media is fawning all over Reznor.

After all the hype and intriguing trailer surrounding this movie, I had very high expectations.  Yeah, it's a great movie, but just not the Earth moving film I had been hoping for.

This is a great movie.  You need to go see it.
