Love Canal and Niagara Falls - 6/28/2026
Today's objectives were simple. Drive Brian and Shawn back to Pittsburgh and return home myself. But we also took the
opportunity to make two roadside stops along the way.
First, we made a quick stop at the Love Canal neighborhood in the city of Niagara Falls, New York. Infamous as the location
of a 0.11 square mile landfill that became the site of an environmental disaster discovered in 1977. Decades of exposure to
dumped toxic chemicals harmed the health of hundreds, often profoundly. The area was cleaned up over a period of twenty-one
years in a Superfund operation. The story of Love Canal is a landmark in the history of the environmentalist movement.
Just a few miles away is the world famous Niagara Falls. It is a group of three waterfalls spanning the border between the
Canadian province of Ontario and the U.S. state of New York. The largest of the three is Horseshoe Falls, which straddles the
international border of the two countries. The smaller American Falls and Bridal Veil Falls lie within the United
States. Formed by the Niagara River, which drains Lake Erie into Lake Ontario, the combined falls have the highest flow rate
of any waterfall in North America and the seventh largest in the world. During peak hours, more than 5.9 million cubic feet
of water goes over the crest of the falls every minute.
We parked on Goat Island in the Niagara Falls State Park. This island separates Horseshoe Falls from American Falls and
Bridal Veil Falls. This gave us easy access to all of the falls with minimal walking. First we checked out Horseshoe
Falls.
While Brian and Shawn took a short break I darted over to American Falls to get a few pictures.
Our one hour visit was the perfect amount of time to capture the photos we wanted. The beautiful weather with mostly clear
skies and mild temperatures was perfect. We were fortunate that the bright sun and mist from the falls provided us with
beautiful rainbows.
Then it was time for us to make the long journey home to Pittsburgh and Nelsonville.
