The Marvels - 11/11/2023
This evening Jake, Sarah and I met at the Athena Grand in Athens to see The Marvels. This is the latest installment
in the Marvel Cinematic Universe and starred Brie Larson, Teyonah Parris and Iman Vellani.
I saw the 2019 Captain Marvel movie, and I really enjoyed it. But obviously, as I watched The Marvels, I realized that
there must've been some events that have taken place between these two movies. So, I was at a bit of a loss. It was
still entertaining and full of action and a few good laughs, including one insane sequence involving a call back to the Broadway
musical Cats.
Brie Larson's Captain Marvel has her powers entangled with two other superheroes to form the Marvels. These three actresses
interact together on screen excellently. In fact, the entire cast is filled with several female characters. When the
film was over, I asked myself and Sarah if this movie would pass a reverse version of the Bechdel test. The Bechdel test
is a measure of the representation of women in film and other forms of fiction. To pass, the work must feature at least two
women who speak to each other about something other than a man. Some iterations of the Bechdel test require that the two
women characters be named. I don't know how many of the male characters that spoke with each other were given names. If
The Marvel does pass a reverse Bechdel test, it would only be by the slimmest of margins.
This is a fine movie just that it doesn't feel like it is up to the Marvel standards that we are used to. This movie kinda
confirms the feeling I've had lately, that we may all be on the downhill slide of the superhero movie phase. Maybe check it
out for yourself.
